something MAJOR, bon bons, and of course...Julep

hello lovelies! I know its been sometime since i've posted.
long story short?..
I had to have some MAJOR surgery.
I'll spare you all the icky deets.
Recouping has been back and fourth.
Some days I feel great and some days I feel like complete doo doo.
But I am home, with my mini and hubs.
I mainly watch HGTV all day, but sometimes the "Style" network likes to run all day marathons of "Giuliana and Bill" and this classy show called "Big Rich Texas"...

I feel like a modern day Peg Bundy, I just need some Bon Bons and I'll be set.
my new found love for gossiping, smack-talking, plastic-surgery obsessed texans started to scare the moms-in-law. She figured it was time to get me out of the house ASAP.

What did she do?
Surprised me with a lovely pedicure!

It actually ended up being perfect timing because the lovely ladies over at Julep got wind of my obsession with the Maven box after I wrote  this review and sent some very fabulous polishes my way.

I was dying to put them to use.
Eva - a very luscious pink and Renee - a soft and lovely lilac

I also was sent this extra little goodie:

The name doesn't lie ladies. Literally, the best cream ever.
I use this stuff every night and my heels have never looked and felt better!
Say buh-bye to icky, dry, and cracked summer heels!

makeup bag 101 - "what do I need?" and "Where do I splurge?"

The trick to being a budget savvy momma comes down to one simple thing:
compromise.

I don't have an unlimited income for couture clothing, dinner out every night, and a trip to Sephora every few weeks to stock up on beauty goodies.
I have a family to support for, and have a budget to keep.
The good news is that nowhere is slimming down your budget easier and more painless than in your makeup bag.
That is because the true secret to the beauty industry is that more often or not, that $20 tube of lipstick is just a $5 one in fancy packaging.
I know it's difficult to ignore the sleek packaging when you're at the beauty counter or in the beauty aisle. But honestly it can be easy to avoid the lure of well-designed tubes packed with makeup goop that you don't really need.

"How?" you may ask? All you need to do is figure out what products you really do need, how much each one is worth, and lastly, which ones you can splurge on.

What should be in my makeup bag?
All women differ when it comes to what kind of makeup they wear on a daily basis. Some opt for the natural just chap-stick and mascara look, and some opt for the glam girl look. But there are occasions where a gal needs more coverage, whether that be date night, girls night out, or wedding, there are certain essentials every girl should have:
- chapstick or lip balm
- foundation
-perfect shade of concealer
- black or brown mascara
- pale lipgloss
-your perfect shade of lipstick
-neutral lip liner
- palette of eyeshadow
- set of good makeup brushes
 my "esscentials" for everyday

Where should I splurge?
I have two items that i spend over $20 or more on.
and
I have oily skin, and I work 9 hour days. My pet peeve is when my makeup runs and when my eyeliner and eye shadow start to crease, run, and fade.
Both of these products work, and work well. I have yet to find another primer(that is less expensive) that does the job and each item also lasts me about 4-5 months.
Primer and Potion are my sure my never fail treats, therefore, I don't mind the investment.

So what are some of your splurges?
A list of other splurge worthy items may be:
The Perfect Foundation
Perfect Shade of Lipstick
 Beauty Balm
A Great Set of Makeup Brushes

Where Can I Save?
After you choose your splurge items, you need to follow through with your compromise and bargain down to lower price points for the rest of you beauty gear.
Cleanser - I admit, I do enjoy my little beauty box samples of $40 facial cleanser. But realistically there are plenty of drug store brands that performs just as well as department store/spa brands.
For example, Oil of Olay products continuously beat out department store brands. Whats even better is that most drugstores carry their own generic brand of popular drugstore brands. Target's "Up and Up" and Walmart's "Equate" are some of my faves.
Mascara - Again, I admit, I LOVE Diors "DiorShow" masacara, but each tube is $25. Opt for Maybellines Great Lash brand instead. Makeup enthusiasts swear by it and it costs less than $5.

Shop High, Buy Low
You know how big designers have their right off the runway couture line but also sell a more commercial, lower price point line in department stores? Take Vera Wang for example, A Vera Wang dress sells at Neiman Marcus for nearly $1,000, but you can buy a Simply Vera Wang dress at Kohls for under $50. Makeup companies do same exact thing.
Use Lancome as an example....
Lancome is actually owned by L'oreal.
 L'oreal also owns Maybelline.
That means that the lower price point Maybelline has access to the same testing, technology, and formulations that the higher priced items over at Lancome do!

I made a really bad chart telling you some of the bigger cosmetic companies and their sister brands(Estee Lauder by the way is like the head honcho of the cosmetics world. They own everyone! I showed just a few)

So, find out who owns who, head to the department store and find what you like. Have someone show you what color palette suits you best. Get samples of foundation, lipstick, blush, etc. on Q-tips.

Say you found a concealer at the Lancome counter. Go to the local drugstore or Target, head over to the Maybelline or L'oreal section and match your sample Q-tip to the less expensive concealers.
Chances are, you will find a similar shade for half the price!

So there you have it my loves! Tips for having a great makeup bag, but not breaking the bank for it. Have a great night ladies, and get some beauty rest;)

battle of the boxes - July Birchbox

I remember as a kid, I would snag all of the little beauty samples my mom received whenever she ordered from AVON. I adored the tiny little lipsticks and mini bottles of perfume.
What is it about beauty samples that we love so much?
The beauty box craze is here, and has hit online consumers with full force.
A reasonable monthly fee for a box full of samples of products that otherwise full-sized would never fit in our budget? Yes, Please!
I received four boxes this month:
1. Julep Maven
2. Birchbox
3. Beauty Army
4. Glossy Box
Recently I wrote a post about how obsessed I am with my monthly Julep Maven box, you can see my July box and read the review here.
The second box up for review today is my July Birchbox.
BB. is a monthly beauty box subscription where you receive 5-6 samples of beauty products for $10.00. Sometimes they throw in "lifestyle/health" products(last month I received a reusable sandwich bag?).
Each month BB has a theme, and this month's theme was the 5 senses, and the box was sponsored by GLAMOUR magazine.
In my box:
1. Tea Forte' Minteas - Lemongrass Yuzu - $9.95 for 3
I really like these mints, strength of an Altoid but yummy. The tin has 75 mints, so it will last me awhile.
2. Annick Goutal Eau d'Hadrien - Fancy Schmancy name for "perfume" - $85.00 - full size
The one item in my box that I didn't care for. The citrus notes and lemon smell lovely.... just not on me(darn you PH balance!)
3. Color Club Summer Pastels Collection - Blue-Ming - $8.00 - .5 fl. oz.
I love the Color Club polishes, quality is equal to OPI and Ellie and cost is just about the same. The hue is aquamarine-ish. Very summery indeed.
4. boscia BB Cream SPF 27 - $38.00 - full size
Another beauty craze this summer was the attack of "BB" creams. For those of you who don't know, "BB"stands for "Beauty Balm". Basically an "All-in-One" concoction that is a moisturizer, primer, foundation, concealer, filler, sunscreen, bronzer or highlighter all in a single cream. There are various formulas and some claim to do more than others. I found that this formula was a bit watery and hard to blend in. Once blended, I was satisfied with the look and feel on my skin, but honestly I prefer my usual and much cheaper BB cream; Maybellines "Dream Fresh BB" .
5. stila "It's Go Time" Lip Glaze - Camera - $12.00 for trio
I'm not a lip gloss gal but I do like stilas glazes. "Camera" adds some extra umph if I layer it over a lipstick. It also has a pretty reddish tint and adds some volume if applied alone. $12 for a set of three minis is a great deal. I was happy to find a FULL SIZE one in this months box.
6. Birchbox Exclusive Earbuds - $10.00 - available in various neon colors
Each month BB tosses in a nice little "extra". These buds are super cute and I love the fact that they come in trendy neon colors. The only thing is the sound quality was kinda dull when i used these with my ipod. All in all it was a nice addition.
Stay tuned for my BeautyArmy box review later this week, its definitely going to a "winner"(hint, hint... wink, wink)

But my neon-needs go far past clothing....
Handbags, clutches, jewelry.... you name it, i probably have a lil somethin' somethin' in a bright hue.

Today's find comes to you all via shoedazzle.com.

Below are a select few of my personal faves:

1. Trevose - Hot Pink structured tote
(I own one of these babies. Perfect for work, hauling the mini's diapers, shoes, toys, snacks, etc. The design of the bag is unique, and I love every inch of it)
2. Yorklyn - Structured Celine-esque hot hued bag(hot pink is the only available color left) .
3. Aventura - Isn't this little gal sweet?! Mid-size cross body bag. Available in BRIGHT NEON HUES. Get one ASAP, we're halfway into the Summer peeps!

Perfect for the working girl or stylish mommies on the go.
